Cloud Hosting for E-commerce in Details

1. Tell us about your company (when launched, where you are based, what market target)

We are a Swiss company based in Geneva, selling men’s Luxury products worldwide.

2. What software and applications do you use for running the project? Why did you choose them and how they solve assigned tasks?

We chose to develop our websites and our own ERP in-house to have a custom-tailored solution for our needs. Mainly PHP and MySQL are used on all levels.

3. What are your and your customers’ requirements for cloud hosting?

From this perspective reliable hosting with full control of our servers backed by high-level customer service is the most important for us.

4. What hosting solutions did you previously use? What struggles did you have with them?

We had managed dedicated VMs for a few years. When our store traffic started to grow, we experienced lots of slowdowns and downtimes. The managed service did not offer any flexibility in terms of server management and debugging was a slow and painful process. Changes needed to be requested and even the smallest tasks took a few hours.

5. Why have you decided to choose Jelastic PaaS? What benefits helped to make the decision and what results you currently get?

We decided to look for a hosting solution that would give us more flexibility as well as ensure high-level security and support.

6. With what Jelastic hosting provider do you work? Why did you choose this provider? What performance and support results have you got?

We met Hidora’s team at the IT convention in Geneva, had a demo of the solution, and chose to work with them. Our team was impressed by what Jelastic can offer. We moved all the operations to Hidora and are extremely happy with this switch.

7. Why did you decide to go with a local service provider? What is the role of personal and sensitive data regulations in your business?

The local company gives us easy access to support and people. We met the team and were immediately convinced by their level of expertise and suggested architecture. Security and data protection is the number one priority for us, so it was essential to host our data in Switzerland.

8. What do you think about containerization? What difficulties (if any) did you have while migrating from VM-based infrastructure to container-based? How do you currently cope with container management?

The migration was relatively fast. Our team did encounter some difficulties in tuning up the servers to match all our needs, but we got all the necessary help and support from the Hidora tech department and within a few days all our applications were migrated. The result was an immediate increase in speed and uptime and user satisfaction.

9. What do you think about the Jelastic pay-per-use pricing model? Describe any cases when the total cost was reduced using this model

Although the price was not a deciding factor for us, we ended up cutting our hosting costs in half with Jelastic.

10. What DevOps technologies did Hidora help you to implement into your business?

Hidora helped us to set up a Gitlab node and implement all the necessary workflows to streamline our development/production process.

11. Has it optimized business processes? If yes, can you give an example?

We were extremely happy to focus on code and make sure it will run smoothly on servers we have access to. This transition allowed us to gain a huge amount of time and avoided lots of frustration that we had with the previous hosting model.

12. Please describe your stack, environment types, architecture if possible

Our typical environment has load balancers, Application servers, Cache and storage nodes, Database servers and SQL proxy servers. We host more than 15 environments for now. There are also GitLab, backup and staging environments.

13. Highlight three main points that you like about Jelastic PaaS

The first one is Great control on the nodes, which gives us great independence.
The second is the ease of use: so set up a new environment and be up in production in no time.
And the last but not least is the fact that it’s actively being maintained and supported, our feedback is taken into account.
